Naples was established in the late 1860's when it was discovered as an area with a wonderful winter climate, abundant fishing, as well as seven miles of white sandy beaches. There was no road access, so passage was by boat which docked at the Naples pier. The first of which was built by a wealthy Kentuckian Walter n. Haldeman.

In 1991 Barron G. Collier visited Ussepa Island, one of the barrier islands near Sanibel. He was so enamored of the place he bought over one million acres and spent a personal fortune dedicating himself to building a road linking Naples to Miami and Tampa, hoping to bring development, and prosperity to the area. It was basically swampland at that time. Since then, the culture of Naples has been created.
